Flash Fiction

                                                                 Across the world

I hear the doorbell echo throughout the house, ringing in my ears I come back to reality and my eyes instantly turn towards the clock. It's 9:18, I had been lost in my mind for nearly an hour and the summer sky had finally turned to darkness. Getting to my feet, I wonder who it might be seeking my presence. I didn't have many friends since I'd only just moved here.
Walking at a slow pace I finally reach the door, I peek threw the tinted window that's tucked in parallel to the door, and recognize a face that had been seen so often when I still lived at my previous house.
"Howdy stranger! long time no see." were the words that were instantly spoken upon eye contact once the door was fully open. "I wasn't really in the neighborhood, but I thought I'd surprise you and see how you were doing. You know, being in a new area and all."
Still slightly shocked, I open the door to let him into my home, thinking of how I had thought all my old friends had forgotten me completely.
"I'm sorry I never stopped by before. I wanted to, but things have gotten kind of screwed back home."
Thinking it wouldn't do any harm by speaking my mind, since he hadn't spoken a word since I'd left. I answered him with "...I thought none of you cared anymore. That I was just another person who left that shitty town..."
"what are you talking about? we've been through hell together! Just because you moved doesn't change anything. Dan, I'd cross the world for you."
As I looked up into his face, I noticed he wasn't smiling anymore. A seriousness had weaved it's way throughout his face, and at that point I realized he truly meant it.
