What I think the first quotation means, is that no matter how rich you are, life would not be worth living without the company of friends. No matter what situation someone is in, no matter what story you will find, someone/ the person always has/had a friend. Whether they stayed loyal is a different story, but no matter what, friendship is intertwined with each persons lives.
As stated, this quote came from Aristotle (very known and famous greek philosopher from mid 300 BC) and I felt that a quote from him would symbolize how long friendship has been decided more important than materialistic things
